1st Award

Senior Sports Personality of the Year 2004

Nominated by Simone Inett of the South Worcestershire Lifesaving Club and Steve Charlton of Evesham High School Specialist College the winner of the Senior Sports Personality 2004 is…

Suzanne Hampson

Over the last year Suzanne’s commitment to Lifesaving has been of the highest order making the club and the country both proud of all her achievements.

After representing the British Royal Lifesaving Team at the European Championships in Sweden 2003, she reached the finals in all of her 9 events.

Suzanne went on to be selected for Great Britain in the 2004 Lifesaving World Championships in Italy. Just being part of the British Team was a real achievement. For the first time the Royal Lifesaving Society and Surf Lifesaving Association entered a joint team. As many of the events are surf or sea based you can appreciate it was no surprise to see most of the team coming from coastal clubs. Being part of an inland club and being unable to train in the sea on a regular basis was a clear disadvantage, however Suzanne’s exceptional pool performance and all round ability meant she was selected and able to go onto to win:

·       Team Gold in the Simulated Emergency Response Competition

·       Team Bronze in the Women’s 90 meter Beach Sprint Relay

·       She set a new British record for the 25meter swim and 25meter tow.

·       She recorded the world’s fastest time in 2004 for the Line Throw Event.

Building up to the world championships, meant Suzanne had to travel to many National Level Camps across the country, taking regular trips to the coast, training twice a day, as well as training with the South Worcestershire Lifeguards.

Suzanne is a great ambassador, helping to raise the profiles for the South Worcestershire Lifesaving Club and the Lifesaving Sport. She is also an excellent role model for the children at Evesham High School Specialist Sports College where she works as a PE Teacher.

Her dedication as a sports person, athlete and member of the club, gives the junior and senior sections aspirations of what can be achieved with a lot of hard work and dedication.

She is happy to share her knowledge gained at this high level with other members to improve their skills. She is also very sociable and popular with all the club members.

Suzanne receives 2 shields and 1 cup + certificate

Norman Redgewell first joined Evesham Rowing Club as a teenager in 1964 and has been deeply involved with Club life ever since. He has won numerous ‘pots’ over the years at many Regattas and Head races, and currently holds three Evesham Head of the River course records at different Veteran categories.

In the mid 1990’s Norman held the post of Rowing Captain and was also Vice-Chairman of the Club from 2001 until 2003. Norman then became involved with coaching, obtaining his Instructors Award, and has been coaching members of the Junior Girls squad for the last 6 years, beginning at the time of the introduction of Project Oarsome – Evesham Rowing Club’s pioneer project for the Amateur Rowing Association. Initially, Norman was the Assistant Coach to Norman Baldwin, taking over as the Senior Coach in the autumn of 2003.

2004 has been an exceptionally successful year for Evesham Rowing Club’s Junior Section, winning medals at Regional and National Championships. The crews that Norman has coached have been at the forefront of this success with his crews winning medals at the National Inter-Regional Championships, National Schools Championships and National Championships. As a result of this success, the girls were asked to trial for the British Junior Rowing Team to compete in an international in France. This resulted in five of the girls being selected to compete in the Junior Girls ‘8’ together with four girls from Headington School, Norman himself being requested to coach the crew. This he did successfully with the crew winning their event, which contributed to the British Team successfully beating the strong French team. His list of honours in 2004 include:

4th Award

Club of the Year 2004

Nominated by Wychavon Sports Secretary, Sue Collins and Committee Member, Mike Leach the winner of the Club of the Year Award is ….

Evesham Rowing Club

The Evesham Boat Club was formally established in the summer of 1863, with sixteen active oarsmen and eight non-rowing members.  The Club grew steadily and was around the thirty-third Provincial Rowing Club to be formed, with the club being re-named Evesham Rowing Club.

It remained in its timber boathouses, one of which was of the floating variety until it perished in a flood. In 1892/3 the Squire and Club President made a plot on the riverside available to the Club and members took out a Mortgage and built a brick structure with a slate roof.

This remains as the Boathouse to this day, extended firstly in 1908 to provide the amenities for members that were lacking for the first thirty years. A changing room, toilets and a small Club Room were added to the basic boathouse accommodation allowing the Ladies to participate.

There had been ladies rowing for the Club in what would be considered “pleasure boats” in the 1880’s and 1890’s but the new extension of 1908 gave impetus to the “family” being part of the Club. Not long after an additional piece of land, owned by the Rudge Estate, was leased to the Club and enabled Tennis grass courts to be created for all members, but predominantly for the entertainment of the rower’s wives.

It wasn’t until the 1950s that the Club’s first hard courts were built. Finally in 1972 the Executive Committee extended the Clubhouse once more to incorporate 2 squash courts, adding a third court later in 1976.

Achievements in 2004

Sport England informed Evesham Rowing Club on 10th December 2004, that the Regional Sports Board met had agreed to increase the grant award by £23,292 to £329,292.’ This was the culmination of eight years effort to provide improved facilities to Club members and the citizens of Wychavon at the Club. The plans costing in total £560,000 include three new floodlit acrylic hard tennis courts, new changing facilities on the first floor, refurbished gymnasium and weights room on the ground floor and provisions for disabled access and use of the clubhouse and facilities. The project has taken so long due to the disastrous Easter flood of 1998 and the restructuring of Sport England last year following the initial grant awarded in 2002.

2004 also saw the Club awarded ‘Clubmark’ status by the Amateur Rowing Association and Sport England, and the Club are awaiting the outcome of an application for Silver Charter status by England Squash, having been the very first club to be awarded the Bronze Charter Award in 2002.

The rowing front has seen one of the most successful years ever, with medals being won at Inter-Regional, National Schools Championships and National Championships events. Also four members of the Junior Girls 16 squad, along with their Cox, successfully rowed in a coxed eight for Great Britain in their annual challenge match against France at Vitre.

‘Project Oarsmen’ continues to be run for year eight children at Simon de Montfort and St Egwins Middle Schools and the Club has just been accepted for ‘Project Oarsome Xtra’, which will involve pupils from Prince Henry and Evesham High Schools. These projects provide free rowing coaching to the pupils, with the costs being covered by the Club, the Amateur Rowing Association and Sport England.

In tennis the club had fielded sixteen teams through the years in summer and winter leagues, with eight teams being promoted and two being relegated. In squash the club fielded seven teams in the winter leagues and one in the summer league, and the men’s first team are currently second in the Worcestershire premier division.

Coaching is provided in all three sports with both the rowing and squash having some of the largest junior sections in the West Midlands. Evesham Rowing Club also:

·       Hosted the ‘Evesham Golden Mile’ indoor rowing event in July with competitors entering from the length and breadth of the country.

·       Hosted a Dragon Boat event in September to raise money for the Anthony Nolan Trust.

·       Organising two Regattas, with the first May Bank-Holiday event being cancelled due to the torrential downpours and dangerous water levels.

For all of this plus much much more, the Club of the Year Award 2004 goes to…

Junior Team Award 2004

Nominated by Norman Redgewell and David Perry from Evesham Rowing Club the winner of the Junior Team Award 2004 goes to….

Evesham Rowing Club - Junior Girls (aged 16) Rowing Four

Over the last 12 months, the Junior Girls 16 Rowing Four have won numerous regattas and Head Races. In February, rowing as a coxed four, the girls raced over the same course as the Oxford / Cambridge Boat Race in the annual National Schools Head. Over 420 crews competed at this event. The Evesham crew finished 1st in their age group. The 1st Gold medal in this event in the history of Evesham Rowing Club.

At the National Schools Regatta in May, the same crew won a silver medal behind the Great Britain No1 girl’s crew. This regatta is the largest and toughest event in the rowing calendar, where the entire specialist rowing schools and colleges compete against one another.

In July the team then went onto a knockout competition to determine who would represent Great Britain in an international match against France. The Evesham Girls had a dead heat for 1st place in the final round and as a result were selected to compete for Great Britain as part of the Junior Girls Coxed Eight Crew.

The following weekend the crew entered the British National Championships. With a last minute change of Cox, they had an exciting row to finish in Bronze medal position.

Later in July, the crew travelled to France for a weeks training with the British Junior Squad. The climax to the end of this week was a very exciting race against the French National Crew. During the race the Great Britain Crew were down slightly on the start and with close racing all down the course, edged closer and closer to win by half a length over their French rivals. This was another historic event for the Evesham Rowing Club as it was the first time a whole crew of four from the club had been selected to represent Great Britain (all beit as part of the national eight)

The commitment of the team is exceptional and missed training sessions are extremely rare even with 6 training sessions per week including:

Summer Training: 4 river sessions of up to 3 hours each and 2 weight training sessions of 1 hour per week

Winter Training: 2 river sessions of up to 3 hours each, 2 cross training sessions of 2 hours and 2 weight training sessions of 1 hour per week.

The girls even find the time to assist the coach with the younger age groups within the Junior Girls Squad. The team are well liked and respected within the junior section of the club.

For their outstanding achievements in 2004 for the Junior Team of the Year Award goes to….

Outstanding Contribution Award

Nominated by Susan Clarke and Lucy Tristram of Hartlebury Bears Football Club the winner of the Outstanding Contribution Award 2004 goes to….

Scott Turley

Organised by Scott there are 20+ children aged 5 – 9 years, who regularly attend weekly training. Apart from the hours spent training these children, Scott also finds the time to carefully plan each session and spend many hours organising and attending matches. All of which helped the Hartlebury Bears Football Team remain undefeated in 2004.

If that wasn’t enough to deal with, Scott also manages to organise various activities including an Inter-Schools Tournament plus many fund raising events.

The task of preparing the club for the FA CharterMark Status is one of the biggest and most time consuming projects, but thanks to Scott’s organisational skills and hard work Hartlebury Bears Football Club achieved the FA CharterMark Status in 2004

Scott is also a good role model for the children. He is calm, patient and unflappable and deals fairly with everyone. He is very diplomatic in dealing with parents, officials and budding Beckhams! He certainly puts his skills learnt in the police force to good effect when dealing with all those connected to the team.

He gives a great deal of his spare time to the club, his dedication to the team and the hours he spends are immeasurable and for these reason we are proud to present the Outstanding Contribution Award 2004 to…. Scott Turley

Senior Team of the Year Award 2004 – Sponsored by the Evesham Journal

Nominated by Roger Wilks and Lee Wilks of Pershore Cricket Club the Senior Team of the Year Award 2004 goes to…. Pershore Cricket Club – Saturday 1st XI

Pershore Cricket Club – Saturday 1st XI achieved promotion to the Birmingham League after playing attractive cricket throughout the season. They went to the top of the Worcestershire League on the 29th May and stayed there until the end of the season. Eventually they won the league by 33 points with 13 wins, which is the highest number achieved by any one team in the history of the league.

The team relied heavily on team spirit, led from the front by skipper Stephen Cooper. The Pershore Youth Policy is very apparent with five players under the age of 20 being regular team members.

The team always have a firm belief in their own ability and do not rely heavily on imported “stars” with good leadership on the field and excellent back up off the field.

They have a good Youth Policy to bring young players into the team, a class team of qualified coaches and wonderful team spirit.

We are pleased to present the Evesham Journal Sponsored, Senior Team of the Year Awards 2004 to… Pershore Cricket Club – Saturday 1st XI
